Default Council's "room sharing" policy

I have lived in a 2 bed house for 6 years now, when we first moved in we only had our daughter, 5 years ago we had our son and for the last 4 years children have shared a room... I recently contacted our local council expecting them to be accomodating to the fact that opposite sex's where sharing a room, only to be disgusted with their response. According to them and 'their' policy a boy and a girl can share a room up till the eldest one is 15 years of age!!!! am I strange for thinking that this is wrong? My daughter is now 9 years old and could start puberty within the next few years, surely she would need her own room, but no, we are not eligible for a transfer for atleast 5 years

Most landlords have this policy. In fact, no person has to have their own room until they are 18 years old. Thats law.

I have to agree with you I don't think it's right!

That's the trouble with the council these days as Deb said. Nobody has a right to a room until they are 18yrs old!!!

That is terrible!! General recommendations are that they shouldn't share beyond the eldest being 11 but it is at the Council's discretion. Are you allowed one extra room than your normal allocation if you exchange? In our area if you have children of opposite sex they get their own rooms when the eldest is 7, and they are currently going through the process of changing the rules and scrapping the age limit completely! I'm hoping they do it sooner rather than later as I have a boy and a girl.

Its the lack of social housing and the ever increasing demand for it that causes landlords to change their policies.
In theory, everyone is allowed an extra bedroom.
